Allergist, Take 4 (+allergy testing)

Parker finished his steroids on Tuesday, and his next allergy appointment was Wednesday. Originally, this visit was scheduled for allergy skin testing. Dr. Brauer said we’d have to play that part by ear, because they wouldn’t be able to do the testing if Parker’s breathing was really bad. He was definitely still wheezing, but she agreed we should go ahead with the skin testing. Everyone warned us that it’d be bad, and I was worried that Wil couldn’t join us. Luckily, Parker did wonderfully! He got one tear in his eye but mostly he was just curious. “Tickle, tickle” is what he kept saying. The hardest part was keeping him from touching/scratching his back for 15 minutes.

Much to our surprise – all 35 spots were negative. He showed no allergies. This doesn’t mean that he won’t develop allergies with age, but Dr. Brauer said we can lean toward the hopeful side that he might outgrow part of his issues. She really feels like his wheezing is triggered by colds, congestion, viral things, and maybe weather shifts.  We won’t re-do allergy skin testing for at least a year, maybe two years.
Our game plan –
-          Pulmicort (0.5) breathing treatment in the morning
-          Singulair (4mg) at night
-          Zyrtec (3/4 tsp) at night
-          Pulimicort (0.5) breathing treatment at bedtime
-          Albuterol (2.5) as needed for wheezing
We go back in 6 weeks, assuming Parker stays well.
